So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

THE HOPE CONSPIRACY – “THE WEST IS DEAD”

Back-in-action hardcore greats The Hope Conspiracy have shared another fired-up, political song off their upcoming first album in 18 years, Tools of Oppression / Rule by Deception. “Politicians in the west, whether they are on the left or right, all eat from the same pig trough,” says vocalist Kevin Baker. “Corporations own every single one of them. The working people were sold down the river decades ago. The professional liars are not concerned with fair wages, human rights, affordable healthcare or the poison in our air, water and food. Both sides play on everyone’s sensitivities to keep us hating one another while they take lucrative donations and marching orders from rent seeking billionaires. The tent cities and rampant homelessness would go away tomorrow if they really wanted it to be so. The system is designed to crush the common people. If you don’t feel it now you will. If you don’t see it now you will. It’s the approaching storm on the horizon and there is no escaping it. The west is dead and our end is near.”

SYDNEY SPRAGUE – “THE CARDS”

“There is so much tragedy in the world and it can be hard to make the best of it sometimes, but really all you can do is try,” Sydney Sprague says of her new single. “It’s basically just my long-winded way of saying ‘it is what it is.’” It follows her 2023 album somebody in hell loves you.

ANI DIFRANCO – “YOU FORGOT TO SPEAK”

Ani DiFranco’s 23rd album, Unprecedented Sh!T, is out next month, and she’s given us another early taste with “You Forgot to Speak.” “This song is dedicated to all those out there doing the hard work of speaking up,” she writes.

ANOTHER MICHAEL – “SEAFOOD”

Another Michael has shared “Seafood,” a sweeping indie-Americana ballad off upcoming album Pick Me Up, Turn Me Upside Down.

MUI ZYU – “THE RULES OF WHAT AN EARTHLING CAN BE”

“An alien sprouts in a library and shows us two doors,” mui zyu says of her new single. “They assure us one of the doors leads to a better universe. However the other door will drag us back to reality under the never-ending curse of the harmful rulebooks earthlings force upon each other. In this cruel world people’s bodies are policed and their dreams are crushed. Thankfully the alien will help us choose the right door.” It’s from her new album nothing or something to die for.

KARA JACKSON – “RIGHT, WRONG OR READY” (KAREN DALTON COVER)

Ahead of her first-ever headlining tour, Kara Jackson has shared a cover of Karen Dalton’s “Right, Wrong or Ready.” “‘Right, Wrong or Ready’ is one of my favorite songs that has become a mainstay in my live sets,” she says. “I love the song because it’s not quite a love song, but more so a statement of the kind of limbo love can become when a person has been on your mind for way too long. A love song for the lonely.”

REALYUNGPHIL, NIONTAY & SURF GANG – “HALFTONES/AMNESIA”

RealYungPhil, Niontay and Surf Gang team up for two hazy, woozy rap songs.

MARGARET GLASPY – “24/7”

Margaret Glaspy announced a new EP, the Sun Doesn’t Think, due out this Friday (4/26) via ATO. The first single is “27/7,” which she says “represents my attempt to understand how the threads of my childhood have woven the adult costume that I wear. I started to see that my beliefs about love and life had not evolved since I was a little girl and it had a pretty direct link to my own sense of worry and anxiety. I love being an adult – with it comes the opportunity to connect your own dots.”

BROKEN HEAD – “BENDING UP”

Broke Head have announced an LP called The Morning Ends, due May 31 via Sunday Drive Records, and lead single “Bending Up” is an alluring dose of Swervedriver-y grungegaze.

THE JANITORS – “LIES”

Swedish psych band The Janitors ride a formidable wave of drone and will release their second album An Error Has Occurred on May 24 via Rocket Recordings. “It’s a bit of a double edged sword this song,” the band say about “Lies.” “It’s about lies by a specific person or the lying fat scumbags in power, your choice. Most songs on the album have that duality. It’s a pretty classic Janitors song. The one riff that just keeps going, and the old quiet/loud dynamic that we love from the Pixies.”

SUSANNA – “EVERYONE KNOWS”

Norwegian composer and art-pop musician Susanna has announced new album Meditations on Love which will be out August 23 via SusannaSonata. “I tried to capture the very vulnerable feeling of leaving a relationship and the shame that often comes with being betrayed,” says Susanna of the album’s first single. “Your world is suddenly turned upside down and you are left with the aching feeling, ‘how can I go on without my love?’ And the ‘love’ is not just that specific person, but all the things you identify with the relationship, and very often how you identify yourself, who you are.”

HESS IS MORE – CÆKE

Mikkel Hess is back with his first Hess is More album in seven years. CÆKE mixes synthpop, krautrock, ambient and a little jazz.

MARINA ALLEN – “SWINGING DOORS”

“I wrote more about love than I ever have before on this record,” Marina Allen says of the latest single from her third album. “Not even necessarily romantic love. ‘Swinging Doors’ is a trust fall. But instead of self-reflection, it’s more about experientially discovering what that means.” Eight Pointed Star is out June 7.

FAT WHITE FAMILY – “WORK”

“This tune and lyric was written by Nathan Saoudi, with a little help from the indomitable Jess Winter,” says Lias Saoudi of the final pre-release single and video for Fat White Family’s new album, Forgiveness is Yours, which is out Friday. “It became a bit of nightmare in production, like, serious graft. Anyway, it’s one of @braindestiny’s best. The idea for the video came from watching Rocky IV on the telly at our family xmas. Nothing brings people together quite like Rock IV. The way Stallone single handedly brings down the Soviet Union. We can all learn something form that. I enjoyed it so much I started binging on Rocky films in January. Most of the other ones are shit, but there’s a scene in the third one – Rock III – where Rock has to accept he’s lost it, grown decadent, delusional, flaccid…Apollo Creed (RIP) has to drag his arse to LA to train him back up the old way, the hard way, the way it USED to be…Between both of these lessons one might learn everything needs to about life, about ambition, about success being nothing more than failure in drag…C C Wade were the obvious choice to direct this homage. They are truth. They are two people that allow whatever their working on to absorb them entirely. There is no limit at Haus C C Wade. No ceiling. No basement. No ledge. All in.”

CORRIDOR – “JUMP CUT”

Corridor’s new album Mimi is out this Friday and here’s one last early taste before the whole thing drops. “Our video reflects the song’s theme of grappling with the overwhelming influence of technology and feeling adrift in its wake,” says the video’s director, Winston Hacking. “Using AI to enhance archival footage resulted in a deliberate distortion, symbolizing the potential consequences of our intertwined relationship with it. It invites reflection on how technology blurs the lines of our identities and infiltrates every aspect of our lives.”

JIM WHITE & MARISA ANDERSON – “PEREGRINE”

Here’s a second song from drummer Jim White and guitarist Marisa Anderson’s new album Swallowtail.

METRONOMY – “WITH BALLANCE” FT NAIMA BOCK & JOSHUA IDEHEN

Metronomy have announced the Posse EP Volume 2, which will be out July 12. Like the first Posse EP, this features all collaborations, including Nourished by Time, Naima Bock, Pan Amsterdam, Lynks, Faux Real, and more. “With Ballance” features Bock and poet Joshua Idehen.

JOHNNY CASH – “WELL ALRIGHT”

Previously unreleased Johnny Cash recordings from 1993 are being released as a new album, Songwriter, that will be out June 28 via Mercury Nashville/UMe. The album was co-produced by John Carter Cash and David “Fergie” Ferguson, and features a newly recorded band of Marty Stuart, Dave Roe, Pete Abbott, and more, plus contributions from Dan Auerbach and Vince Gill.

CULTS – “CRYBABY”

“‘Crybaby’ marks a new direction of exploration,” say Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion of Cults’ new single. “We experimented with a lighter sound influenced by The Crystals, Joe Meek & Kraftwerk. A fun song but also a call out to both sides of codependency.”

THE STAPLES JR SINGERS – “LOST IN A WORLD OF SIN”

’70s gospel/soul greats Staples Jr Singers have announced Searching, their first new album since their 1975 classic When Do We Get Paid, which will be out June 14 via Luaka Bop.
